Since the second half of the 1980s Sister Elija Boßler has photographed survivors of the Dachau concentration camp who have returned to the place where they were subjected to violent internment. Many of the survivors visited the adjacent Carmelite Convent “Heilige Blut” or indeed stayed there under the care of the Carmelite nuns.

As time passed, the number of survivors who attended liberation ceremonies and told their stories started to dwindle. And so Elija Boßler began to photograph the guests.

Over the next 30 years she has taken numerous, very striking portraits of people from a variety of nations.

For the first time a selection of 30 photographs is to be shown at the Dachau Memorial Site. The biographies of the portrayed will be told in a catalogue. A video featuring interviews with contemporary witnesses complements the exhibition.
