On October 13, 2011, the German Architecture Prize
\nawards ceremony was held in Dresden\u2019s Albertinum. The main award was won by Sir
\nDavid Chipperfield for his rebuilding of the Neues Museum in Berlin. One of the
\nfive awards for \u201coutstanding building culture in Germany\u201d went to Florian
\nNagler Architects GmbH for the Visitors\u2019 Center at the Dachau Concentration
\nCamp Memorial Site. Federal Minister Dr. Peter Ramsauer presented the award to
\nthe architects and the principals, Karl Freller, Director of the Stiftung
\nBayerische Gedenkst\u00e4tten, and Dr. Gabriele Hammermann, Director of the Dachau
\nConcentration Camp Memorial Site. Florian Nagler had promised not to construct
\na building, but rather create a place that integrates unobtrusively into its
\nsurrounds. His concept was convincing from the outset. Florian Nagler also
\nexpressed his delight in being able to have kept his promise and thanked the
\ninvolved institutions, in particular the Freising Building Authority who
\naccompanied the work. The project was initiated by the former Stiftung
\ndirector, Professor Dr. Andreas Heldrich, and Dr. Barbara Distel, former
\ndirector of the Dachau Memorial Site, both of whom went to great efforts to
\nensure worthy financing.<\/p>\n

Florian Nagler and his team of architects are
\ncurrently restoring the rooms located in the east wing of the historical
\nmaintenance building which house the archive, library, and administration
\noffices. Aside from minor renovations since 1965, these rooms have hardly
\nchanged. The inbuilt fixtures and alterations from the last forty years are
\nbeing stripped back, the heritage-protected building returned to its basic
\nstructure and the architectural remnants once again made visible.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
