\nPapyRossa Verlag 2012<\/strong>Shortly after his hazardous escape from the Dachau concentration camp
\nin May 1933, the Bavarian Communist and Reichstag deputy Hans Beimler wrote
\nabout his ordeal. His published account was translated into several languages,
\nquoted in international newspapers \u2013 and in Germany circulated illegally. With
\nhis report Hans Beimler hoped to galvanize resistance against the Nazi
\ndictatorship in Germany
\nand abroad. He worked underground for the Communists in France, Czechoslovakia,
\nand Switzerland before going
\nto Spain
\nand fighting on the side of the International Brigades against Franco. Hans
\nBeimler was killed on December 1, 1936 near Madrid.<\/p>\n

For the first time his report is published in
\nthe original version in the Federal Republic, supplemented by photographs, documents,
\nand an extensive biographical sketch as well as notes on the specific
\ncircumstances of its writing and the broader historical context.<\/p>\n

\n2010<\/strong>Established in March 1933 and so one of the
\nvery first concentration camps, Dachau
\nhas remained a synonym for the inhuman Nazi apparatus of repression down to the
\npresent day. Almost immediately after liberation plans were formulated to alter
\nthe Dachau camp
\ngrounds by erecting Christian symbols and churches. Between 1960 and 1967, in
\nthe context of setting up the Memorial Site, \u201cplaces for meditation\u201d were set
\naside in the northern area of the former camp: the Catholic Mortal Agony of
\nChrist chapel, a Jewish memorial, and the internationally known Protestant
\nChurch of Reconciliation. The Carmelite convent \u201cHeilig Blut\u201d as well as a
\nRussian Orthodox chapel followed. These religious places of remembrance in the Dachau camp stand for the
\nearnest intent to commemorate the victims of National Socialism. Their complex
\nbuilding histories as well as their artworks are presented together for the
\nfirst time in this richly illustrated publication.<\/p>\n

\nthe German public to the prominent trials against Nazi culprits which took
\nplace during the years of occupation and the early period of the FRG and the
\nGDR, held before Allied and German courts. They reveal the differences and
\ninteraction between criminal prosecution in the East and the West and show how
\nthe public perception of the trials in the West zones and later the Federal Republic developed with all its
\ncontradictions and inconsistencies. Initially a degree of latitude was also
\ngranted to courts in the Soviet zone, only for the justice system and the
\npublic domain to soon fall under the dictates of Communist Party propaganda.<\/p>\n

\nSite opened in 1965, which is frequented by several hundred thousand visitors
\nfrom around the world annually, there are two further less well-known places of
\nremembrance in Dachau: the Memorial Cemetery
\non the Leitenberg and the former SS shooting range near Hebertshausen, where
\nsome 4,000 Soviet prisoners of war were murdered in 1941\/42. Published in the
\n\u201cDachauer Diskurse\u201d series, the present study shows how the forms of
