For the most part the National Socialist concentration
\ncamps have been exhaustively researched and depicted. The Dachauer Hefte<\/em>, published from 1985 to 2010 as a periodical, played
\na salient role in research studies on the concentration camps. But beyond the
\nformal definition of the concentration camp as a place of imprisonment under
\nthe authority of the Concentration Camps Inspectorate in Oranienburg or the SS
\nMain Economic and Administration Office in Berlin, countless other camps of
\ncoercion existed where Nazi terror was implemented in the same or in similar
\nfashion and the prisoners certainly felt them to be \u201cconcentration camps\u201d. This
\nnumber includes some 200 \u201clabor reeducation camps\u201d, \u201cpolice detainment camps\u201d
\nor \u201cextended police prisons\u201d under regional Gestapo authority, \u201cforced labor
\ncamps for Jews\u201d, \u201cgypsy camps\u201d, ghettos and other sites of imprisonment.<\/p>\n

The essays collected in this volume examine problems
\nof this camp world under German rule, map out the landscape of terror, and
\npoint out desiderate in research.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

The exhibition and this accompanying publication are
\nbased on the unique stock of miniature drawings by the Slovenian Vlasto Kop\u00e0\u010d
\nwhich he completed secretly during his imprisonment in the Dachau concentration
\ncamp. With brutal honesty he captured the everyday routine of camp life and
\nportrayed his fellow prisoners on small fragments of paper.<\/p>\n

The catalogue contains all of these drawings, number
\nalmost 80, in premium quality reproductions and provides background information
\non the life of Vlasto Kop\u00e0\u010d.<\/p>\n

The catalogue is rounded off by essays on the
\nSlovenian group of prisoners in the Dachau concentration camp, the Dachau
\nTrials in postwar Yugoslavia and the collection of artistic works from
\nconcentration camps and prisoners in the Museum for Modern History in Ljubljana<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

The fact that many
\nNazi criminals were able to pursue carriers following the collapse of the Third
\nReich is one of the sore points of German postwar society. As investigations
\ninto their past gathered pace towards the end of the 1950s, they presented
\nthemselves as completely integrated and socially reestablished citizens to the
\ninvestigating authorities. Up until now this scandal has only been explored
\nsummarily and structurally. In contrast Christina Ullrich takes up the specific
\nbiographies of mid-level SS leaders who were directly involved in the
\nHolocaust. Her prime concern here is not the crimes committed before 1945 but
\nthe postwar careers and biographies of the offenders \u2013 until their court
\ntrials. The main question here is how these offenders were integrated into
\nsociety and how they organized their new careers. Drawing on 19 typical
\nbiographies she identifies a pattern behind the integration of Nazi offenders
\nwhich could well serve as a model for other cases<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

\nagain be a homeland? My answer is: yes, they can. But they can only be so if we

Norbert G\u00f6ttler grew up in the immediate
\nvicinity of the Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site and still lives there
\ntoday. His stories and memories revolve around this site of terror. He depicts
\nvictims, perpetrators, and fellow travelers, including in his own family
