Mannheimer<\/strong>, Max (edited and revised by Marie Luise von der Leyen): Drei Leben:
\nErinnerungen. –<\/strong> Munich: dtv 2012Max Mannheimer spends
\na carefree boyhood in a small town in Moravia. The first signs of a political
\nturnaround become evident there in the mid-1930s. In October 1938 the
\nSudetenland is annexed in the \u201cAnschluss\u201d and the German Army marches in. The
\nold life is gone forever. Together with many other Jews, the Mannheimer family
\nis forced to leave their homeland and find a new place to live. Restrictions
\nand harassment increase. In 1943 they are deported to Auschwitz. Max
\nMannheimer\u2019s parents, three of his siblings, and his wife are all murdered.
\nTogether with his younger brother he survives further deportations to the
\nWarsaw and Dachau concentration camps. After liberation his third life begins.
\nMax Mannheimer starts a family and for a long time suppresses his ordeal. After
\nthe death of his second wife, who had been active in the resistance, he is
\nmoved to write down his memories of the Holocaust. Written in the form of a
\n\u201clate diary\u201d they become known worldwide.<\/p>\n

Pilwousek<\/strong>, Ingelore (ed.): Verfolgung und Widerstand: Das Schicksal M\u00fcnchner
\nSozialdemokraten in der NS-Zeit. – Munich: Volk Verlag 2012The Social Democrats were amongst the first victims of the Nazi reign of
\nviolence. Without exception persecution by the new dictators meant the loss of
\ntheir political offices, while for most this also involved periods in prison
\nand finally emigration or a retreat into private life. Many died while detained
\nin the concentration camps or prisons; others committed suicide.<\/p>\n

This memorial book is based on the files and documents of court
\nproceedings, the prisoner lists of concentration camps and the Munich police.
\nReparation documents from the postwar period are also used.<\/p>\n

The goal of the book
\nproject is to document the precise extent and various facets of the persecution
\nof Munich\u2019s Social Democrats, as well as rekindle the memory of those who
\nsuffered and their fates.<\/p>\n

\nPhoto portraits by Elija Bo\u00dfler; exhibition catalogue with biographies. \u2013
\nDachau: KZ-Gedenkst\u00e4tte Dachau 2013Sister Elija Bo\u00dfler has lived in the Carmelite convent Heilig Blut
\nDachau, located on the former grounds of the Dachau concentration camp, since
\n1966. At the end of 2011 she presented the archive of the Dachau Memorial Site
\nsome 100 striking black-and-white photographs she had taken of survivors of the
\nDachau camp over a period spanning twenty years.<\/p>\n

A selection of these
\nremarkable portraits is presented in the exhibition and this accompanying
\ncatalog. The photographs are complemented by short biographies of the former
\nprisoners.<\/p>\n

\nUnited States Holocaust Memorial Museum Encyclopedia of Camps and Ghettos,
\n1933-1945 – Volume II: Ghettos in German Occupied Eastern Europe, Part A.
\n-Bloomington : Indiana University Press 2012This volume offers a
\ncomprehensive account of how the Nazis conducted the Holocaust throughout the
\nscattered towns and villages of Poland and the Soviet Union. It covers more
\nthan 1,150 sites, including both open and closed ghettos. Regional essays
\noutline the patterns of ghettoization in 19 German administrative regions. Each
\nentry discusses key events in the history of the ghetto; living and working
\nconditions; activities of the Jewish Councils; Jewish responses to persecution;
\ndemographic changes; and details of the ghetto’s liquidation. Personal
\ntestimonies help convey the character of each ghetto, while source citations
\nprovide a guide to additional information. Documentation of hundreds of smaller
\nsites\u2014previously unknown or overlooked in the historiography of the
\nHolocaust\u2014make this an indispensable reference work on the destroyed Jewish
\ncommunities of Eastern Europe.<\/p>\n

\nhistory. – Lincoln : University of Nebraska 2012Weeks after Adolf
\nHitler came to power in 1933, the Nazi regime established the first
\nconcentration camps in Germany. Initially used for real and suspected political
\nenemies, the camps increasingly came under SS control and became sites for the
\nrepression of social outsiders and German Jews. Terror was central to the Nazi
\nregime from the beginning, and the camps gradually moved toward the center of
\nrepression, torture, and mass murder during World War II and the Holocaust.
\nThis collection brings together revealing primary documents on the crucial
\norigins of the Nazi concentration camp system in the prewar years between 1933
\nand 1939, which have been overlooked thus far. Many of the documents are
\nunpublished and have been translated into English for the first time. These
\ndocuments provide insight into the camps from multiple perspectives, including
\nthose of prisoners, Nazi officials, and foreign observers, and shed light on
