An evening devoted to music in concentration camps with Francesco Lotoro<\/h1>\n

Music
\npossessed a wide variety of functions in the \u201ceveryday life\u201d of the
\nconcentration camps. It could console, give voice to hopes, or send out a
\nsignal of solidarity and resistance; at the same time however, it was used as
\nan instrument of repression and torture, for example when the prisoners fell in
\nfor roll call, were forced to sing, or helplessly exposed to it for long
\nperiods.<\/p>\n

The evening
\nbegins with the screening of an excerpt from Le Maestro<\/em>, a documentary that gives an insight into the work of
\nFrancesco Lotoro.<\/p>\n

Drawing
\non a number of examples, Francesco Lotoro explains the background to and
\ncircumstances surrounding the respective compositions. Frequently the pieces
\nwere created in secret \u2013 by autodidacts as well as professional musicians. The
\nworks reveal a broad spectrum of styles and genres: Francesco Lotoro has found
\nsimple songs, but also a complex opera, classical symphonies and examples of
\njazz, which was banned at the time in Nazi Germany.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Francesco Lotoro<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Francesco Lotoro<\/strong> is an Italian pianist, composer, and musicologist. He is regarded as
\nthe world\u2019s foremost collector of musical compositions created in concentration
\ncamps, military prisons, and prisoner-of-war camps between 1933 and 1945. He has traveled the world for the last 25 years adding to his
\ncollection, speaking with survivors or family relatives of former prisoners.<\/p>\n

He has already rediscovered and archived more than 5,000 works, some of
\nwhich he has recorded on a CD entitled \u201cMusic from the Concentration Camps\u201d.<\/p>\n

The talk is in Italian and will be translated.<\/p>\n

The music evening takes place on Tuesday, April 26,
