Right
\nat the start of his lecture, Detlef Garbe emphasized that only 20 years ago the
\nJehovah\u2019s Witnesses were still very much \u201ca forgotten victim group\u201d, although
\nthey were only community with a worldview to be assigned their own special prisoner
\ncategory. As so-called \u201cBible students\u201d they were marked with the \u201cpurple
\ntriangular patch\u201d.<\/p>\n

In the Dachau concentration camp Jehovah\u2019s Witnesses were
\nsubjected to particularly cruel and brutal harassment by the SS: they were
\nbeaten, ill-treated, mocked, and, placed in the punishment company, were forced
\nto perform the most arduous labor. Despite these measures, the SS rarely
\nsucceeded in breaking the resolve of a \u201cBible student\u201d. The strategy for ensuring
\nthe collective survival of this prisoner group was based on the firm belief in,
\nas Dr Garbe put it, \u201ccommunity spirit and steadfastness\u201d. Although they refused
\nto serve in the war as conscientious objectors, a decision that cost many of
\nthem their lives, their situation improved somewhat in the second half of the
\nwar. Because their principles of faith did not condone any attempt to escape,
\nthey were assigned to \u201cposts of trust\u201d. For example, in an external work detail
\nthey built the hunting lodges of SS Reichsf\u00fchrer Heinrich Himmler at Schliersee
