The final phase of the \u201cThird Reich\u201d was accompanied
\nby a scarcely believable increase in terror and violence. There was no
\nmurderous action that the Nazis backed away from, no barbarism or atrocity they
\nwere not afraid to use, no \u201cenemy\u201d who could feel safe. The \u201ctotal war\u201d they
\nhad declared meant the \u201ctotal annihilation\u201d of people, countries, cities,
\nvillages. The absolute will of the Nazi regime to exterminate and destroy no
\nlonger had any systematic or economic rationale.<\/p>\n

In its first issue, the journal Konzentrationslager. Studien zur Geschichte des NS-Terrors<\/em>, looks
\nat the crimes committed as the war was coming to an end. Editors and authors
\ntrace the evidence that indicates how the National Socialists, facing impeding
\ndefeat, now sought to achieve primarily the criminal ideological goals of their
\npolitics of extermination, casting off inhibitions and liberated from pragmatic
\nmilitary, economic or social considerations as well as sensitivities in the
\npopulation.<\/p>\n

The journal sees itself as a forum for
\nresearching the Nazi camps, seeking to cover the vast spectrum of themes
\ninvolving the camp system and its history after the war, while also stimulating
\nthe historical debate on National Socialism and the mass violence unleashed by
\nstates in the twentieth century.<\/p>\n

Stefan H\u00f6rdler calls
\ninto question the predominant view of current research, namely that the
\nconcluding stage of the Nazi concentration camps was characterized by
\ndisorganization, chaos, and random measures: he shows that a comprehensive
\nreorganization of the concentration camp system was launched in March 1944 and
\nthat the final year of the war represents a distinct stage in the genesis of
\nthe camps. From 1944 onwards the Nazi regime pursued two goals: an accelerated
\neconomization of the camp system and its stabilization. To analysis both
\ndimensions the author introduces the concept of rationalization, enabling both
\nthe mass murder and the utilitarian-oriented \u201cselection\u201d of prisoners able to
\nwork to be seen as part of this development.<\/p>\n

More than twelve million copies of Adolf Hitler\u2019s
\npropaganda work Mein Kampf<\/em> were
\nprinted up to 1945 and distributed throughout the population. It has since then
\nbeen prohibited to publish any further editions. Now for the first time, 70
\nyears after Hitler\u2019s death, the Institute for Contemporary History has
\npublished an annotated critical edition of this notorious work.<\/p>\n

Mein
\nKampf<\/em> is Hitler\u2019s most important political work. It
\nis \u2013 all at once \u2013 a stylized autobiography, ideological program, history of
\nthe Nazi Party, inflammatory propaganda piece, and a guide on how to gain
\npower, in Germany and beyond. Nowhere else did Hitler explain so openly and in
\nsuch detail what he believed and wanted than in this work. Mein Kampf<\/em> is thus one of the main sources for understanding
\nNational Socialism. The critically annotated edition of the Institute for
\nContemporary History is meticulous in its treatment of this source: it arranges
\nthe historical facts, explains the original context, reveals Hitler\u2019s
\nintellectual precursors, and contrasts his ideas and assertions to the results
\nof modern research. Not least, the edition shows how Hitler\u2019s ideology
\ninfluenced the criminal politics pursued by the Nazi regime from 1933 onwards.
\nBecause Hitler<\/em>, Mein Kampf. Eine kritische Edition<\/em> aims at shedding light on the
\npolitical and historical myths propagated, its form and style deliberately
\naddresses a broad reading public.<\/p>\n

\u201cTotgeschlagen \u2013 Totgeschwiegen\u201d (\u201cbashed up \u2013 hushed
\nup\u201d) reads the inscription on the commemorative plaque for the prisoners forced
\nto wear the pink triangular patch. In 1985 it was the wish of Munich\u2019s gay
\ngroups to have this plaque of pink marble hung in the Memorial Site\u2019s museum,
\nas a way of addressing the topic of the persecution of homosexuals at this
\nlocation at least. What followed however was a decade-long struggle against old
\nprejudices, not only amongst the survivors of the concentration camp but also
\nin political circles. Continuous pressure from the gay scene, backed by a shift
\nin the zeitgeist, finally brought about change \u2013 this victim group was finally
\nincluded in commemorations on equal footing with the other groups.<\/p>\n

The controversy and discussion about the
\nlong-ostracized victim group of the homosexuals began 30 years ago. To mark the
\noccasion, the book examines the background to their persecution and follows the
\nlong struggle to gain worthy remembrance.<\/p>\n

In the Nazi era human solidarity was destroyed with
\nbrutal violence. The repercussions reverberate down into the present. Persons
\nwho dared to engage in political resistance against Nazi violence are still
\npaid far too little attention in the public discourse. Their courage, their
\ndisplays of solidarity and their unstinting commitment to ideas of humanity
\nhave only been partially appreciated, their importance as models for the
\npresent and the future yet to be fully acknowledged.<\/p>\n

The focus of this book is thus on the testimonies of
\nformer concentration camp prisoners who, motivated by their convictions,
\nengaged in acts of resistance and solidarity. Ingeborg and J\u00fcrgen
\nM\u00fcller-Hohagen look at the long-term and transgenerational consequences of the
\ndestruction of human solidarity. They analyze the process of \u201cforgetting\u201d that
\nbegan in 1945 and was very differently accentuated in West and East Germany.
\nDrawing in part on their own experiences in psychotherapy, counselling, and
\nschools, they relate this constellation to current day challenges and thus seek
\nto contribute to a society that is even more strongly defined by solidarity.<\/p>\n

The International
\nMonument is the main place of remembrance in the Dachau Memorial Site. It was
\ninitiated in the 1950s by the Comit\u00e9 International de Dachau (CID), the
\nassociation of concentration camp survivors. To realize the project the CID
\nheld two international design competitions in 1959 and 1965, which were won by
\nthe Yugoslav artist Nandor Glid with his concept for a large monument complex
\nand a central bronze sculpture. The inauguration, overshadowed by student
\nprotests and physical altercations, took place on September 8, 1968.<\/p>\n

To mark the seventieth anniversary of liberation
\nin 2015, the Dachau Memorial Site opened a special exhibition on the background
\nhistory and reception of the International Monument. The exhibition and catalog
\nrevolve around important works of art by Nandor Glid, who spent his whole life
\nexploring resistance and persecution in National Socialism artistically. In
\naddition, hitherto mainly unknown competition contributions by sculptors and
\narchitects from Britain, France, Germany, Austria, and the former Yugoslavia
