The Board of Trustees of the Stiftung<br \/>\nBayerische Gedenkst\u00e4tten (Bavarian Memorial Foundation) decided not to continue<br \/>\nusing it at its former location. Following the restoration work and a color<br \/>\nanalysis, the highly symbolic original can now be seen at the end of the main<br \/>\nexhibition. The replica that has replaced it at the entrance to the Jourhaus since<br \/>\nApril 2015 will remain. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 20px; float: left;\" title=\"Tor im Jourhaus \" src=\"https:\/\/www.kz-gedenkstaette-dachau.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/bilder\/aktuelles\/Newsletter\/Ausgabe 8 - Sommer 2017\/Jourhaus 1939_1942.jpg\" alt=\"Tor im Jourhaus \" width=\"250\" height=\"176\">The SS ordered the inmates<br \/>\nto forge the camp gate in 1936. Its inscription, \u201cArbeit macht frei\u201d (\u201cwork<br \/>\nsets you free\u201d) made it a cynical symbol of the suffering the concentration<br \/>\ncamp inmates were forced to endure. Its theft on the night of November 2, 2014<br \/>\nwas an assault on the remembrance of this past.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, the gate was<br \/>\nin very poor condition when it was rediscovered under a tarpaulin on the side<br \/>\nof a path. It is severely corroded and has in places become porous. In order to<br \/>\nstop the advance of this degradation, the gate was preserved in its current<br \/>\ncondition. In addition, a comprehensive color analysis was performed to learn<br \/>\nmore about the coloring of the camp gate at various times. Subsequently, the Memorial<br \/>\nSite developed a concept for presenting the camp gate as part of the permanent<br \/>\nexhibition.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin-left: 20px; margin-right: 0px; float: right;\" title=\"Tor in Vitrine\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kz-gedenkstaette-dachau.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/bilder\/aktuelles\/Newsletter\/Ausgabe 8 - Sommer 2017\/Tor_Vitrine_1.JPG\" alt=\"Tor in Vitrine\" width=\"250\" height=\"176\">When this laborious work<br \/>\nwas finished, the camp gate in its glass case was able to be unveiled at the<br \/>\npress conference on July 27, 2017, where State Minister Ludwig Spaenle again<br \/>\nemphasized the particular importance of the gate as a key indictment of the<br \/>\nformer Dachau concentration camp. Abba Naor, survivor of the Dachau subcamp at<br \/>\nKaufering and Vice President of the Comit\u00e9 International de Dachau (CID), Karl<br \/>\nFreller, Member of State Parliament and Director of the Bavarian Memorial<br \/>\nFoundation, and Dr. Gabriele Hammermann, Director of Dachau Concentration Camp<br \/>\nMemorial Site, provided information on the interesting results of the<br \/>\nexamination by the Bavarian Landesamt f\u00fcr Denkmalpflege (State Office for the<br \/>\nPreservation of Historical Monuments).
