News from the Archive<\/h1>\n

The Archive and
\nthe collection at the Memorial Site got their start from an initiative of the
\nsurvivors of Dachau concentration camp, who collected material for an
\nexhibition in the former maintenance building in the late 1950s. In the
\nprocess, contact and communication with their former comrades was of key
\nimportance. Their work is not only the foundation of our collection on the
\nhistory of Dachau concentration camp, but also on the history of the Memorial
\nSite.<\/p>\n

Digitization project in 2016<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Thanks to a
\nproject embracing all memorial sites and financed by the German Federal
\nCommissioner for Culture and Media, it was possible last year to digitize more
\nthan 30,000 pages from the legacies of former inmates and inmate organizations.
\nThis marks a big first step on the way to securing this material for the long
\nterm and making it accessible. Follow-up projects are needed to digitize more
\nof the inventory.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\"OrdnerNew finding aid<\/h3>\n

Finding
\naids and databases are the most important tools for using the Archive. An
\noverview of the Memorial Site\u2019s inventories is provided by the finding aid that
\nwill also be accessible to Archive visitors in the future. After a two-year
\nproject phase, the inventory of written documents and the photo collection of
\nthe Archive, which take up an area of about 250 meters, were screened and their
\ncontents summarized in a 350-page book. The finding aid is arranged by topic
\nand has the same structure as the Archive. Along with files on individual
\npersons, which were compiled according to the core themes of \u201cinmate
\nnationalities\u201d; \u201cinmate categories\u201d, \u201csubcamps\u201d, and \u201cwork details\u201d, the
\nmaterials on medical care, for instance, or on medical experiments, rations,
\npersonnel matters, cultural activities, and \u201cprotective custody documents\u201d
\nprovide a glimpse of daily life at Dachau concentration camp. The inventories
\non the camp SS, the Dachau Trials, and the history of the Memorial Site are
\nstill in preparation.<\/p>\n

\nThanks to the finding aid, visitors as well as
\nthe staff of the Memorial Site can quickly and comprehensively grasp the
\nthematic structure of the Archive, as well as its specific inventories.  It describes the contents of the files, references
\nthe origin and term of the material, and indicates its scope and location.
\nUsers also learn whether the archived material is available in its original
\nform or as a copy. The finding aid is a significant addition to the Archive
\ndatabase and facilitates scientific work.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Survivors, relates, and
\ntheir \u201ctreasures<\/strong>\u201d<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Even in 2017, communication with
\nthe survivors of Dachau concentration camp and their relatives is still
\ntremendously important to the further expansion of the Archive and collections.\n<\/p>\n

\nThe number of inquiries reaching the Archive is
\nconstantly increasing. There were nearly 1,700 in 2016, most of which came from
\nrelatives of former inmates. Among these last year was a young schoolgirl who
\nis a sixth-generation descendant of one of the former inmates from the initial
\nstages of Dachau concentration camp. Descendants often know little or nothing
\nabout their relatives. In many cases, relics from time spent in a concentration
\ncamp are handed down carefully from generation to generation and finally lead
\nto an inquiry with the Memorial Site. Again and again, families are ready to
\ngift material on their relatives to the Archive, usually as scans or copies,
\nbut sometimes even the originals. One major goal of the Memorial Site\u2019s
\ncollecting activities is to be able to present the former inmates of Dachau
\nconcentration camp and its subcamps in all their variety and uniqueness, and in
\nthis way to reveal the human beings behind the SS \u201cnumbers\u201d. Some of these \u201cnew
\nadditions\u201d in 2017 are presented here by way of example:<\/p>\n

New acquisitions<\/h3>\n

\"NotizbuchNotebook of \u00c9douard
\nFroidure (1899\u22121971)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Belgian survivor \u00c9douard
\nFroidure, a clergyman from Brussels, noted down the names, dates of birth and
\ndeath, as well as the addresses of Belgians who died at Dachau concentration
\ncamp. We can assume that he wanted to make contact later with their relatives.
\nThis list of names, as well as the other things he jotted down in his notebook,
\nwere important pieces of evidence for the survivors. They wanted to use them to
\nrecord the crimes perpetrated at Dachau concentration camp and establish a
\nsystem of information. We thank the Secretary General of the Comit\u00e9
\nInternational de Dachau (CID), Roger de Taevernier, for handing over this
\ndocument to the Memorial Site\u2019s Archive.<\/p>\n

\"ZeichnungDrawings by
\nMicha\u0142 Porulski (geb. 1910\u2212 date of death unknown)<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Memorial Site acquired
\noriginal drawings by the trained draftsman and Dachau survivor Micha\u0142 Porulski
\nfrom the estate of the Polish Dachau inmate Aleksander Wojno (1901\u22121999). The
\nsix drawings handed down to us forcefully illustrate the inhuman working
\nconditions and especially the brutal behavior of the guards when enforcing camp
\npunishments. Porulski, who stayed at Dachau for a time after the liberation,
\nalso crafted the so-called Dachau Album, now in the possession of the daughter
\nof a Jewish survivor.<\/p>\n
