\"FritzMeyer, Beate:<\/strong> Fritz Benscher. Ein
\nHolocaust-\u00dcberlebender als Rundfunk- und Fernsehstar in der Bundesrepublik,
\nG\u00f6ttingen \u2212 Wallstein 2017<\/p>\n

Jew, concentration camp survivor,
\nHamburg native in Bavaria, yet still a favorite of the public: the actor and
\nquizmaster Fritz Benscher. \u201cUnfortunately, the \u2018Fuehrer\u2019 didn\u2019t like me very
\nmuch.\u201d This is how Fritz Benscher (1904\u20131970) describes the years following
\n1933 and his imprisonment in the concentration camps of Theresienstadt,
\nAuschwitz, and Dachau. He was finally liberated in Allach on May 1, 1945.<\/p>\n

During the Weimar Republic,
\nBenscher gained his first experience in theater and with the still novel radio.
\nAfter the liberation, he was senior director of Radio Munich, which later became
\nthe Bayerischer Rundfunk (Bavarian Broadcasting). He dedicated himself to
\nreeducating his fellow countrymen with his acerbic wit and revelations of Nazi
\ncrimes. Later he staunchly fought against rearmament despite the prohibitions
\nagainst speaking and other sanctions imposed on him. Although many took offense
\nat his contributions, most of his listeners loved him. He continued his
\ntelevision career with undiminished success in the 1960s as a moderator,
\nquizmaster, and actor. <\/p>\n

Beate Meyer, a research assistant
\nof many years\u2019 standing at the Institute for the History of the German Jews in
\nHamburg, recounts Fritz Benscher\u2019s life knowledgeably and in great detail. For
\nthis purpose, she analyzed a many newspaper articles and archived materials,
\nalso talking to companions of Fritz Benscher. This produced an easily readable,
\nstimulating book on an extraordinary entertainer, while providing en passant<\/em> a history of the beginnings
\nof radio and television in the Federal Republic of Germany.<\/p>\n

The repatriation
\nof liberated concentration camp inmates, prisoners of war, and forced laborers
\nwas a complex process closely related to several historic developments during
\nthe period immediately following the war. This applies, for instance, to the
\nsubsequent history of the liberated camps, the history of displaced persons and
\nthe camps established for them in the East and the West, to the exodus and
\nmigration in the period immediately following the war, or to the East-West
\nconflict, which soon escalated to become the Cold War. <\/p>\n

The national
\ncontexts of the repatriations in the early days of the Cold War have only
\nrecently begun to receive the attention of historical research. The second issue
\nof the journal \u201cKonzentrationslager. Studien zur Geschichte des NS-Terrors\u201d
\n(\u201cConcentration Camps. Studies on the history of the Nazi terror\u201d) takes up the
\nreturn of former concentration camp inmates, political prisoners, and forced
\nlaborers to their homelands in Western, Eastern, or Southern Europe, which was
\nlargely organized, but also frequently accomplished on their own initiative.
\nThe focus of the articles collected here is on the repatriation of the men and
\nwomen liberated from Nazi camps. <\/p>\n

\nThe respective articles not only look at
\norganizational and political questions of the repatriations and the agencies
\ninvolved, but also at the fates of individual groups of liberated concentration
\ncamp inmates. Both the situations in the specific camps after their liberation
\nas well as in the countries to which the survivors returned are examined. In
\nthe process, it becomes clear that they could by no means count on being
\nreceived \u201cwith open arms\u201d. Instead, they were often met with disapproval, up to
\nand including open hostility. Most of the individual articles methodically
\npursue a biographical approach, which also gives contemporary witnesses a
\nchance to speak. The issue is rounded off by two articles, one on the building
\nhistory of the concentration camps, and the other on the changes in discussions
\nof war guilt in present-day German commemorative culture. Thanks to the
\nin-depth researching of its sources, this volume brings to light many new
