Book Presentation by Dr. Carlo Gentile

Book Presentation by Dr. Carlo Gentile

On Wednesday, October 2,
2013 Carlo Gentile will present his book Wehrmacht
und Waffen-SS im Partisankrieg. Italien 1943-1945
. The presentation will
begin at 7 pm and take place in the Visitor’s Center.

Seventy years ago, on
September 8, 1943, Italy
announced its unconditional capitulation. In German-occupied Italy more than
70,000 persons lost their lives in the partisan war between 1943 and 1945,
including some 10,000 civilians who were killed in massacres and hostage
shootings by the occupiers, events today associated with the names Sant’Anna di
Stazzema, Civitella in Val di Chiana, and Marzabotto. These events are deeply
etched in the collective memory of postwar Italy. Members of the Dachau SS,
such as the head of the guard troop Max Simon, were involved. Carlo Gentile
spent a decade working as an expert at war crimes trials and is more recently
known for his criticism of the senior prosecutor in Stuttgart who in 2012 ordered the closing of
the last case against those accused of involvement in the SS massacre at
Sant’Anna di Stazzema.

The presentation begins at 7 pm
in the Visitor’s Center; admission is free of charge.
